Report from the Second Annual DaimlerChrysler Cup

NORTH AMERICA EDGES EUROPE IN THE SECOND DAIMLER-CHRYSLER CUP

The European and North American business communities in Tokyo held the second friendly golf tournament at Atsugi Kokusai Country Club on 1 October. Sponsored by German-American auto giant Daimler-Chrysler and 33 other companies, the tournament brought together 139 players from the American and Canadian chambers of commerce on one side and the European Business Community on the other side. Using the double Peoria (shin-peria) scoring system and calculating an average score for the best 80% of each team, the North American team came out on top by 0.4 strokes. The tournament was the second of its kind to take place in Tokyo, and will be played annually in the future.

Particiants

139 players participated in this event, including nine ladies. The North American team had 72 players, the European 67. The players represented more than 15 different nationalities. The Americans made up for the largest group, about 45 players, followed by 35 Japanese, 15 Germans, 11 Swedes and 9 Finns.

Golfers of all levels took part, from pro's and "semipro's" with handicap's below 5 to a large number of relative beginners with handicaps of 36 or over. Thanks to the new peoria (shin-peria) play format, everyone had a fairly good chance to be well placed in the reults.

Sponsors and Prizes

The event had 34 sponsors, including the title sponsor Daimler Chrysler Japan. Thanks to this, we had over 1000 prizes worth more than 12 million yen!

Apart from the beautiful Hoya crystal trophy to the winning team and a Hoya crystal driver head for the winner of the individual competition, notable prizes were a valuable Chanel necklace and a Chanel bag, United, Lufthansa and Virgin Atlantic pairs of tickets to USA and Europe, a lot of golf equipment and accessories from Pro Tour Inc., Tabasco, MIT, Titleist, Nike, Ping, Premier Worldwide Movers.

Phoenix Seagaya Resort provided three packages for two of accommodation, golf and golf school, Tama Hills G.C. a lot of golf rounds, Oakwood, Westin, and Intercontinental Tokyo Bay and Yokohama accommodation at their facilities. Japan Communictions Inc. U100 cards, VISA jackets for the winning team,Tokyo American Club dinners, Coca-Cola, LVMH and Tropicana drinks, Interlang Japanese lessons and FusionGOL web hosting services.

The cash sponsors', CIR Commercial Realty, White & Case, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, Konigstedt, Medrad, TUV Rheinland, Merial and e-central,contributions were very important as it enabled us to improve the drink and food service at the event and cover other cost related to organizing the tournament.

Apart from the trophies, DaimlerChrysler Japan also provided golf travel bags and caps for all players and one week free test drives of their cars to winners of all four near pin and the longest drive prize. DaimlerChrysler also covered the cost for the web site and material cost for posters, signboards, pocket guides, scorecards, etc.
