About the Daimler & Chrysler Cup
(2003 - 2007 DaimlerChrysler Cup)

Event History

Bob Grondine
"Most Senior Advisor"
The idea of a Europe-U.S. annual golf event was first raised in 2001 in discussions between Mr. Robert Grondine (ACCJ Governor), Mr. Richard Collasse (EBC Chairman) and Mr. Erik Ullner (EBC Vice-Chairman). The concept was to have an annual high-profile "Ryder Cup in Japan" that will draw the attention of the media and foster closer relations between the US and European companies in Japan.

In the spring of 2003 discussions were taken up again and a decision was made to go ahead, and the first tournament held on 26 September 2003.

This is the fifth tournament. The European team won the first cup in 2003 and the North American team won in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and then Europe again in 2007.

Organizers

The tournament is organized by The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) and the European Business Council in Japan (EBC).

The Task Force in charge of the planning and practical arrangements consists of:
  • , ACCJ Special Events Committee,
          Vice-Chair (ACCJ Golf TF Leader)
  • , ACCJ, Deputy Executive Director
  • , CCCJ, Executive Director
  • , EBC Treasurer
  • , Hapag-Lloyd (Japan) K.K. (DIHKJ)
  • , FCCJ Executive Director

    Title Sponsors and other sponsors

DaimlerChrysler Japan was the Title Sponsor of the tournament since its inauguration until 2007. The company DaimlerChrysler was dissolved in 2007 but Daimler Japan and Chrysler Japan decided to co-sponsor the event and thus the North American-European link was maintained.

We also welcome other sponsors. To find out more about how to become a sponsor, click here.

    Who can participate?

    The tournament is open to:
    1. Members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (CCCJ) and their respective embassies (in combination representing Team North America), and
    2. Members of the European Chambers and other business organizations that are affiliated with the EBC and their respective embassies (in combination representing Team Europe).
The Joint Chamber Task Force which organizes and conducts the event reserves the sole discretion to make all final decisions on applicant registration and participation in the event, regardless of Chamber affiliation.

What is there to play for?

Although this is a friendly tournament to be played in good spirit, it is also a serious competition. The winning team will hold the Daimler & Chrysler Cup until the next tournament is held. Note that the best 80% in each team will be counted in the team scores.

Thanks to prize donations from the title sponsor, and from an expected number of other sponsors, we expect that no player will leave empty handed from this event. Top players by net and gross score, near pins and longest drive will receive prizes. The most valuable prizes will be drawn among all participants.

    What is the cost?

The particpation fee is ca 24,000 yen, including play fee, caddie, lunch and party after play, service and tax. 3,000 yen is collected as registration fee, the reminder (21,000 yen) should be paid to the club after play.
The only additional costs are for breakfast and extra drinks not included in the lunch or party.

    Play system

We use the New Peoria (shin-peria) handicap system whereby the golf club calculates handicaps on hidden holes and uses a formula to determine the actual handicap as follows:
  • The club's scoring computer picks six (6) holes for each out & In course as hidden holes for players which are not announced until the end of play.
  • Total par scores for the 12 holes chosen are 48.
  • Maximum score for each hole is cut at double par + 1 (i.e. on a par 4 hole = 9)
  • The aggregate scores of the 12 chosen holes = "A"
  • Handicaps are then calculated as (A-48) x 1.2
  • Example: if you score 60 on the 12 hidden holes, your handicap will be 14.4 [(60-48)x1.2)]
  • The maximum handicap is set at 30 for men and 36 for women.

The Shin Peria System is often used for tournaments in Japan when players do not have an official course handicap. It also provides all players with a fair method of calculating handicaps.

    Bus transportation

There will be a bus transportation to and back from the event. The bus will leave at 6:10 from the ACCJ and return to Tokyo after the event, leaving Atsugi at 17:45. The round-trip fee is 4,000 yen.
